What DPI Do You Actually Need for Wall Art Prints?

Short answer: 150–200 DPI is enough for wall art viewed from normal room distance (a few feet away), not the 300 DPI figure often quoted as a universal print standard. 300 DPI comes from close-up print work — magazines, photo prints held in your hand — where the eye is much closer to the paper. DPI is a print setting, not a fixed rule

DPI (dots per inch) describes how many pixels are packed into each printed inch. What actually determines whether a print looks sharp is the combination of DPI and viewing distance — a billboard printed at 20 DPI looks sharp from the street because no one stands two inches from it. Wall art sits somewhere between a billboard and a photo print: viewed from several feet away in a living room or hallway, not held up to the eye like a magazine page.

The pixel-count math, per standard size

Formula: pixel dimension = inches × DPI. A 20x30 print at 150 DPI needs 3000×4500 px — well under the 6000×9000 px that a flat 300-DPI rule would demand, even though both can look sharp on a wall at normal viewing distance.

Which column should you use? 150 DPI is a reasonable floor for pieces that will hang where people don't stand close (living rooms, stairwells, above furniture). If the piece might be viewed up close — a desk, a small reading nook — 200–300 DPI gives more margin. When in doubt, more pixels is safer, but don't assume a file "isn't good enough" just because it falls short of 300 DPI at the largest size.
